Monthly Wrap-Up | August 2018

Hi, book lovers!

Who’s ready for the weekend?! I’ve been waiting months for this one to come. My nerd fam is all heading to Fan Expo! My little nerd in me wants to scream while I write this post. It’s my second expo, but I’m just as excited as I was with my first.

Okay, let’s get back to book stuff, shall we? August was such a fantastic month! Sure, stress kicked my butt, but books were my saviour. I’ve been putting off the TOG series for years, but I’m so happy to be a part of this fandom. I just wish there were more books after Kingdom of Ash, which, I know, will break me in two.

I can’t believe I’ve read this much. I typically breeze through four books, max. However, this month, I couldn’t get enough of the TOG series. I almost squeezed in Lifel1k3, but I’m still reading that sci-fi. I’m thrilled finally to tackle my never-ending TBR pile!

Now, I just need to catch up on my reviews. 🤦‍♀️

Royally Bad by Nora Flite

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve avoided romance books for years. But this year, I want to take more risks with certain genres. And I’m so happy I got the chance to read this thrilling romance! Nora combines high adrenaline, steamy scenes, gangsters, and a fiery love story.

Aftermath by Kelley Armstrong

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve heard over the Twitterverse that YA shouldn’t be “dark,” but I disagree. YA will always show the gritty and seedy underbelly of our society. And Aftermath is one essential YA book every reader needs to read. Kelley tackles school shootings with a new perspective.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finally took the plunge! And I am a total TOG fan. I don’t know why I doubted I would. I absolutely adored reading this book. Celaena is the badass female lead. Throne of Glass is a solid lead to a fantastic series I’m sure to love for years.

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m not surprised Sarah’s sequel surpassed her debut novel. But it does. Sarah cranks up the fantasy, the romance, and the heartache. You finally get to understand why Celaena is who she is. The character development is stellar. And I had such a great time reading this book. I knew about the plot twist, but that doesn’t take away from storytelling though.

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I ADORE it so much. The worldbuilding, character growth, strength, heartbreaking pasts, and beautiful writing make this third installment of the Throne of Glass series one of my favourite books of the year.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don’t know if I have words for the fourth book. Well, ROWELIN may be the only one I can think of. I’ve shipped them before I read the series.

This fourth installment explodes with new characters and conflicts. I can’t wait to get to the rest of the series!

This haul looks so small yet cute. Am I right? Last month, not a lot of books drew my eye. But I knew I had to grab these books from my favourite authors. And I finally bought one of Kristoff’s books. I can’t wait to read these books!

How did August treat you? Did you finally put a dent in your TBR list, read a book you’ve been dying to read, or buy your most anticipated book of the month? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to chat.

  1. August was an okay month for me but I did buy a lot of books. Usually, I have some self-control when it comes to spending money. With my vacation canceled and my birthday, I went a little bit overboard.

Thankfully, most of it was with birthday money or gift cards. I also bought Catwoman: Soul Stealer. I’ve never read a Sarah J Maas book so I’m a little nervous but excited 🙂

  3. You had such a great reading month! And I’m really happy that you’re enjoying the ToG series so far, I’ve been wanting to read it for a while now but keep putting it off (too much hype). Maybe I should just start and see how I like it.

  4. Yay for bingeing on ToG, haha! Queen of Shadows is easily my favorite of the bunch. I can’t wait for Kingdom of Ash though. Like, it’ll be.. what? 992 pages? GIVE ME THAT MONSTER. I’ll gladly devour the whole thing in no time! But yup, we’ll all be broken and torn to shreds by the time we finish reading. There’s no doubt about that – at all.

I have Lifel1k3 on my TBR, but skies know when I’ll pick it up.. Also got a copy of Catwoman, but I still need to read Batman. And I haven’t read ANY of Schwab’s books yet, so I’m not buying anymore of her books before I did. Like, automatic precaution should I not like the writing. [Honestly, that’s just me trying to convince myself I have to be cautious so I don’t buy all the books.. :’)]

I’ve read a ton of the older books on my TBR in August, which I’m happy about. Now I’m all about the sequels. Really hoping to knock a dent in my TBR this month because it’s SO NEEDED. :’)

    Happy reading, Siobhan!

    • My body is ready, my brain is so freaked out right now. I read the excerpt and cried. Ugh 😭

Batman is good. I need to catch up on Wonder Woman though. Ahaha, I relate so much to that.

Same…same. I have too many sequels to tackle. 🤦🏻‍♀️

      • I purposely avoided the excerpt because it’d hurt to start reading and then have to wait some more and.. nope. Not doing that, hah.

Oooh; now I’m even more curious. I’m going to try and knock Library of Souls off my current reads today and then.. maybe.. start Hunting Prince Dracula? I feel like reading that one right now. Maybe I’ll change my mind during the day, hah.

Oh well! I’m like “As long as the next Sequel September TBR doesn’t consist of mainly the same sequels, I’m good.”

      • I’m over halfway through HPD right now and it’s so.. DARK. I LOVE IT. Gives me the creeps all the time, hah. I’m glad there aren’t as many.. uhm.. corpse descriptions as was the case in SJTR though because those really freaked me out at times. I’m such a pussy. :’)

        Awesome! 😀

      • I was fuming last night, haha. There’s this one part with SPIDERS. I absolutely hate and loathe spiders and I couldn’t, COULDN’T handle it and nobody warned me about it and I was freaking out so bad. I was going to sleep after THAT chapter. [Safe to say I finished the whole book before I even contemplated trying to sleep..]

      • Same here. Although I do realize spiders isn’t really something people should be warned about in general but there are a few who know how I am regarding spiders and they’ve read the book so.. I expected at least one of them to warn me about it. :’) Idk. :’)

I’m stubborn? And it was already too late anyway. It was near the end of the book when you’re all caught up in it and you want to know how it ends and.. well.. it wasn’t like I was going to sleep properly right after reading the first couple descriptions of the ugly things, haha.
